Working my way up!

Hey all,
After celebrating my birthday with some amazing friends, I began to open my birthday presents. Thanks to the generosity of my friend's and family, I have raised over $1,500. I am a quarter of the way to raising enough money to go to Africa to work with big cats for a month... Flying halfway around the world to help is not inexpensive! First post!

Hello everyone who happens to be reading my blog,
My name is Shannon and my two passions in life are working with animals and humor. Often times there is humor in working with animals. For example, while working at Pandemonium Aviaries* with Mia, an extremely intelligent African Grey Parrot, she posed an interesting dilemma. When we would try to get her to say the colors of certain baby blocks we put in front of her (we used the modeling method) she would say the color of the block... but only once. Then she would outright laugh at our efforts to try to get her to repeat that action. Time and time again she would look at the block, say the color, and then (much to our dismay) refuse to say the color of any other blocks again. She proved her intelligence then, as if to rub it in, would laugh at our outrageous antics as if to say, "You two dumbos don't even know your own colors?" I would put her intelligence at that of an eight or nine year old, whereas RJ, the macaw who is the background of my blog, I would estimate to have the intelligence of a toddler. When you work with animals, you soon learn that you never stop learning and that each animal is an individual and wants to be treated as such. I look forward to continuing to post and I hope all who read this blog will find it entertaining!
